First Smog Tower Installed in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar

With a great amount of toxicity, the air has become much venomous and poisonous. By seeing such bad quality of air, Delhi’s government took a step forward and established up the first ‘smog tower’ in Delhi’s much popular Lajpat Nagar market. The towers were functioning from the last Friday.

These towers are huge and are of height 20-ft. As per the saying, the “smog tower” will help in purifying the air to a certain extent and is utmost beneficial for that area as it sees an average footstep of approximately 15000 people on a regular basis.

More about the purifier

The equipment has been installed by the Traders Association Lajpat Nagar (TALN). General Secretary of the Traders Association Lajpat Nagar, Ashwani Marwah also said: “such initiatives were the need of the hour keeping in view alarming pollution levels in the city, which has also become a pollution capital.”

The air pollution levels of the city have been rising at an alarming rate. In the last 48 hours, the quality of air has persisted in the ‘severe’ group. However, a great improvement in the quality levels of Delhi’s air has been noticed on Friday morning. As per the Air Quality Index (AQI) data, “major pollutants PM2.5 was 302 in ‘very poor’ category and PM 10 was at 283 in ‘poor category’ in Lodhi Road area.”

How Delhi is not feasible for the air purifier?

Earlier the Supreme Court asked the Centre and the Delhi government to make a road map on how we can work on this project in the Delhi (NCR) and kill the problem of air pollution. However, there has been a question for the feasibility of this project as Delhi is a city which is congested and small space is also a query for such a big project.

Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director (research and advocacy) at Centre for Science and Environment said “city like Delhi which is exposed to the environment and is also rich in high pollution, weather is dynamic with multiple sources of pollution. Due to such factors, investing in such devices is not an easy task which also requires huge cost.”

Pollution is becoming the major cause of many diseases and needs to be solved as soon as possible. There are various diseases which can even be life-threatening. Some of them are listed below:

  • Intensified cardiovascular and respiratory illness
  • Damaged heart and lungs
  • Diminished cells of quality in the respiratory system
  • Enhanced ageing of the lungs
  • Decreased functions of lungs
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Cancer
  • Shortened life span

There are various steps you can take to reduce the exposure of the hazardous air:

  • Indoor planting
  • Ban smoking and fireplace
  • Avoid particle pollution caused by the car and engine
  • Make the green patch of your home greener
  • Reduce trips and share your rides with another

Footnote

Though the air purifiers have been installed- self-security and steps to make the air cleaner is a great step to surround yourself with purity and fewer diseases. Implement the overwritten steps and indulge in a happy and healthy you.
