Chavli Chi Usal is a traditional Maharashtrian dish featuring tender black-eyed peas cooked in a mildly spiced, coconut-rich gravy. This comforting and nutritious curry pairs perfectly with rice or flatbread.
For a Serving Size of Two:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup dried black-eyed peas (chavli), soaked overnight and drained
- 1 small onion (about 50 grams), finely chopped
- 1 small tomato (about 100 grams), chopped
- 1-2 green chilies, slit
- 1/4 cup grated fresh coconut
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Procedure:
- In a pot, add soaked black-eyed peas with enough water and a pinch of salt. Boil until tender, then drain and set aside.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, allowing them to splutter.
- Add chopped onion and green chilies, sautéing until the onions turn golden.
- Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Stir in the cooked black-eyed peas and mix well. Add garam masala and salt, then cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
- Add grated coconut, stir well, and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
