Umbrellas, sunscreen and sunglasses would be out and in use by now. Hydration can be the key to manage summer heat but also what you eat and not eat plays an important part in keeping you healthy in summers.
While temperature has already soared across the country, apart from drinking more water, we can also avoid stuffing our mouth with few food items that can cause an increase in heat in our body.
- Spices and chillies
- Red meat
- Alcohol/Fizzy drinks
- Caffeine
- Greasy fried foods
Traditional spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and pepper add to the taste quotient of Indian dishes. However excessive spicing dishes up like Biryani during summer may not turn out to be good. These spices have a strong and pungent nature and can boost the body heat further making a person feel dehydrated. Spicy food or food loaded with chillies could also aggravate the heat in the stomach and cause acidity. Spices and herbs offer a lot of health benefits but it’s time to consume these in moderation.
Foods like mutton, lamb, and pork, beef are high in saturated fat, which possess a risk of raising blood cholesterol. As a result, foods which hold the risk of increasing cholesterol could bring in the risk of heart diseases and cause harm. Thus, it should be avoided; rather going for vegan protein options is a good alternative to go for.
Yes, it might feel great to curl on a comfy sofa with a glass of something fizzy or fruity or something strong after a long day. But doing that in summers would just make you feel more dehydrated. Heat and alcohol is not a good combo. Drinking alcohol has a chance of generating so much heat in your body that it might lead to a heat stroke. Go for home-made jaljeera or raw mango panna.
Most office-goers and youth these days depend on caffeine to get through the day actively. Multiple cups of tea and coffee are usually a part of their habit, which is why most corporate offices even offer caffeine/tea for free. But it’s advisable to avoid coffee and tea in summers, because caffeine generates a lot of excess heat in the body. Carrying a home-made nimbu pani or buying fresh coconut water would be a good option. You’ll feel more active, and still manage to stay cool.
Yeah, right the combination of tea and pakoras sounds perfect but during summers, this snack-from-heaven can be hazardous to health. Excess oil can hinder digestion and can also cause acne and contributes the most in making you obese. Who doesn’t love French fries? But again, fries are loaded with excess oil and calories so better to stay away from tempting but fried food, and you won’t feel too much of the heat. If you still wish to have pakoras, bake or air-fry them.
