5 Ways How Your Body Adapts to the Summer Season

The human body works in mysterious ways. It has its own mechanisms and workings that enhance its effective function. The body also has different processes that help it in adjusting to different environments and living conditions. Each year, your body acclimates to the heat during summers. This means that the body takes some time to get accustomed to a new climate or new conditions. You respond physiologically and behaviorally to a new environment.

This adaptation to a new season is extremely common and essential. Your body starts accepting and learns to adjust in those conditions. In doing so, the body shows different signs of adaptation. These signs are an indication that you are acclimated. As you start staying active in the heat, your body continues to adapt to the heat and humidity.

To understand this process better, here are some ways in which your body adapts to the summer season every year:

  • You start sweating more: During summers, the blazing sun shines on top of our heads throughout the day. Due to all the heat, the body starts sweating at a very fast rate. Even at low temperatures, the body keeps sweating. The sweat glands kick in which produces a lot of sweat with low sodium concentration. This helps in better and quick evaporation of the sweat, enhancing the body’s cooling effect. You should focus on drinking water to avoid dehydration.
  • Metabolism rate slows down: The body’s function slows down during summers. Due to the hot season, you require more energy to carry out several activities. Every chore takes more effort. Dehydration and sweating can slow the body to the extent that it burns fewer calories. High and better metabolism can assist you in burning excess calories. Exercising can help in increasing the metabolism rate.
  • The heart pumps more blood: As we start living in the hot weather, more plasma is generated in the body. With more availability of plasma, the blood circulation improves and a large volume of blood is circulated throughout the body. This enhances the flow of oxygen to various muscles and the body also maintains a normal temperature. The workload on the heart is reduced resulting in a decreased and better heart rate.
  • You exercise better: Acclimatization to the heat can affect your training and exercise. The performance of an athlete improves as the body acclimates to the heat. Athletes run, exercise and train faster once their body starts adapting to new conditions. You tend to experience less exertion.
  • Heat acclimatization wears off: The body’s adaptation slowly starts fading away with time. With a new season approaching right after, you get accustomed to new weather and new conditions. Each year during summers, the body will automatically learn how to adjust to the heat.

Footnote

The adaptations discussed are specific and unique to every individual. People may adjust to the heat in different ways and varying time periods. Usually, it takes seven to ten days for the body to acclimatize to the summer season in order to work efficiently.
