Strong winds, shady clouds, darkish environment and hefty rains- the season of monsoon is around the corner! With the knock of the rainy season, almost every kid loves to eat the fried and crispy delicious delicacies that can easily take a toll on their health. Skipping healthy and nutritious food for the crispy bhajias, spicy sauces and sugary and sweetened beverages not only weakens the kid’s health but also increase the risk of various diseases especially foodborne diseases like jaundice, typhoid, malaria, dengue and many others.

These health-friendly tips boost the immunity of your child while reducing the risks of developing monsoon health ailments.

  • Give boiled water: Monsoon season brings numerous waterborne diseases. Boiled and purified water is the key to save your kid from plenty of diseases. Try to avoid the consumption of packaged and sugary beverages and feed your kid with warm and boiled water. Boiled water ensures that it doesn’t carry any germs inside it and hence it is good for the overall health and well-being of your kid. Be it mineral bottled water, healthy buttermilk, or nutrient-rich juices- never buy any drinks from the outside during the monsoon season.
  • Cut down the processed and packaged food: Processed and packaged food looks tempting and mouth-watering during this season. But such foods are unhygienic and filled with sugar, oil and carbs that can make your kid suffer from various types of diseases during this season. Make you kid light, healthy and nutritious meal to make them all hale and hearty. You can add dalia, moong khichdi, sautee vegetables, yoghurt, hot soups and salads in your kid’s diet to boost their health with proper nutrients and to reduce the risk of various monsoon ailments.
  • Serve well-cooked and warm food: Avoid eating the raw foods or veggies during this season. Raw veggies are hard to digest and sometimes it might contain germs and harmful bacteria that can easily harm the health of your kid. A well-cooked and warm food can kills all the health detrimental microbes and reduce the risk of food poisoning and other health ailments as well. Avoid any stale food and cut out the foods that give any strange odour. You can go the ‘steaming way’ during this season as it does not kill the nutrients from the food while destroying the harmful germs and bacteria.
  • Add veggies and fruits delight: A child diet should contain all the essential vitamins and minerals in order to avoid any health ailments. Always add fresh and seasonal produce in the diet of your child to give them proper nourishment. Fresh fruits and veggies are filled with essential nutrients that can boost the immunity of your kid and reduce the risk of fever, cough and flu. You can make soups, salads (veggies should be steamed properly), smoothies (keep out the fruits from the fridge 1-2 hour before making smoothies) and stir fry veggies to soothe your kid’s taste buds and nutrition profile.
  • Stick to healthy snacking options: Kids loves snacks! Instead of giving them unhealthy, packaged and store-bought snacks, you should add home-made healthy snacks to keep them satiated and healthy. You can add nuts and seeds in their diet, sprouts, cottage cheese salad, home-made healthy sandwiches and home-made flavoured yoghurt with a dash of seeds. Healthy and home-made dishes are good for your kid’s health and it is also filled with nutrients which keeps them energetic and in fine fettle.
  • Maintain hygiene: Maintaining hygiene is the basic step to boost your kid’s overall health and well-being. Clean and wash your kid’s hands properly after they come from outside is a must. Change your kid’s clothes as soon as they come from outside and cover them with mosquito repellent creams whenever they go outside as it protect them from the harmful germs and bites and help in keeping diseases like malaria and dengue at bay.
