There is no fixed standard definition to love yourself or there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ theory for anyone’s body. Decades of social conditioning led by shame, guilt and fear of judgments have made females suffer in silence and critique themselves for not qualifying for society’s impossible, endless expectations. No more, we say! And this actor’s voice is a part of this conversation- Sameera Reddy, who’s has our heart after her recent Instagram video, which is totally the kind of vibes we need in our real and virtual world right now!
For far too long, society has victimized women into making them believe them that need to fit into objectified portrayal made by men, its conjured up image of feminine beauty, which includes a slim waist, toned body, six-pack abs, big breasts, lighter skin tone and on. One way to begin the walk towards a kinder world would be to just let the women be, and not compare or force them to look or behave a certain way.
The actor also cited how, during her early years, she compared herself to her sisters, who were thin. “And then I went to the industry where I was compared to everybody. I tried to lighten my skin, I used to do crazy things like [use] coloured lenses because I wanted that fair, light-eyed look. I used pads on every part of my body which I felt was not keeping up with the norms. I did everything that made me feel more crap about myself. That’s why today work harder to fight against any kind of shaming,” she confessed.
Provoked by a message she received from a mother of a one-year-old child, Sameera recorded her authentic self on a video to boost morale and give the world a lesson or two about self-love. “I got a DM from a mom of a one-year-old on Instagram. She wrote that she doesn’t feel beautiful, and she said she feels really fat. And she feels ugly. Oh my God! These are the words that I fight. I fight against them. I try my best to be fearless and show you how exactly how it is!”
Encouraging people to embrace themselves as they are, the actor also showed her acne-scars on face and baby fat-riddled belly. And she owned it like a true winner! Later she added “Coming back to the public view in a way that I feel no pressure for my own mental health has helped me stay focused on being a good mother and a person who is self-accepting that makes it a healthier space for all around me. Don’t dwell on what you are not and what you don’t have! Let’s focus on the good. We are all #imperfectlyperfect,” she wrote and she gave out a positive message with her video.
More power to you, Sameera. We all feel it’s high time to stop judging women based on their body size, color, shape, and age.
Over to you
We all should support women and we should free ourselves and others from the fact that everyone can have their own curves and color. We should work on developing a positive image of women’s bodies.
