We all want to lead our way forward whether at home, schools or offices or show families how it is done. However, leadership requires a great skillset, comes with some perks, some cons but most importantly what are the attitudes or adjustments that you need to fulfil the leadership role?

“Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example.”

Leadership is not something just a title but a responsibility. Sometimes, a young child in your home can be a good leader versus the parents. It is not just about age, experience but it is about the examples you set through your actions which culminate from the attitude, values you have as an individual. So let’s dive right into details:

5 things that help you be a good leader at home and at work:

5C’s of Leadership to adapt:

  • Competence

The leader must know how to do everything, but rather that they know what to do and how to get it done. Every successful leader should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and as a result, will know exactly who they need on their team to help compensate in the areas where they lack expertise.

  • Courage (and Confidence)

As a leader, you will be calling the shots and making all the big decisions often under immense pressure, time restrictions and with great consequences. For every decision made there will always be critics. So you should know how to still stick to your decision and it is an attitude building format and you learn by working on it and building it internally. Either way, take a decision. Great leaders have the appetite for failures as well. A successful leader will have the courage to follow through with decisions, because they believe in themselves, their capabilities and what they have to offer.

  • Communication

Effective communication will motivate others to jump on board with your vision. Through a clear communication, successful leaders have the ability to convey expectations, promote accountability, and build trust. Leaders who skilfully interact with others will ensure that their message takes deep root with their audience and will guarantee it is understood. If you are building a family, you are living in a joint family and leading it then you are accountable for advising and communicating with them. You have to take everybody’s opinion on even buying a home appliance. Communicate well and you will naturally become a leader because they will understand you are inclusive.

  • Coaching

It is important that you don’t hog up on all the limelight alone. The most effective leaders also have the qualities of a great coach. Leaders who coach their team will not only experience higher productivity, they will also improve morale and retain top talent. Coaching becomes a life skill when you are a leader. Your subordinates become more comfortable and they can also become leaders someday. It gives you, as a coach, feedback on how to conduct yourself, how to address people and how to guide somebody.

  • Compassionate

Your teammates look up to you as a leader and when you are compassionate from upward to a downward level, people will have more respect for you. People will want to seek advice from you. Every skill that has a trickle of kindness goes a long way, for example, you will have to be compassionate versus your judgement and do what you do because of who you are and not what others might think of you. For example, maybe you want to sack up somebody says your judgement but if you communicate effectively and compassionately, you’ll understand what their point is and you’ll ask to rework on it and this gives them a chance and makes you compassionate.

Models of communication are different but an important part of the leadership process. Leader comes from observation and actualization and can mould yourselves to understand and put yourself in such a situation and see if you are the one.

Leadership qualities affect your image. There could be a gap from what I think and what my team could think of me so we need to internalize and communicate with people around us to know more about us.

Communicating with authority doesn’t always mean yelling at somebody but rather means being authoritative in your tone rather than your volume. It shows that as a person and leader you are impatient, tensed and nervous if you are yelling and think that is more authoritative.

Footnote

You’ll keep learning till your very last moment so keep your doors open to learning. Think of how you would feel if it happened to you and then you will know right how to go about it. You need to be your own motivator. You’ll not get results in one day so you’ll only be motivated once you start seeing results so motivation is a process. And for you to get motivation, it is important to start working on your goal or yourself every single day. It is not an ignition that happens and gives you a spark; it’s a consistent effort that keeps you going.
