Dietary Guidelines for Management of Proctitis

Proctitis is an inflammation that happens in the lining of the rectum. Proctitis is generally known as inflammatory bowel ailment. The symptoms of proctitis include rectal bleeding, pain, diarrhoea, a constant feeling of bowel movements. The symptoms of proctitis are generally not very long and incorporating some dietary changes can help in easing out the symptoms of proctitis. From consuming fibre rich foods to adding probiotics in your diet– there could be plenty of foods that can manage proctitis while making your stools easily pass through the system. Here are some essential dietary guidelines for the management of proctitis.
- Cooked veggies: Cooked and soft green vegetables provide the fibre that is easy to digest and helps in easing out the symptoms of proctitis. Cooked carrots, spinach, sprouts, cabbage and broccoli provide essential nutrients along with great quantities of fibre that can help in managing the proctitis. Such foods also help in smoothening the movements of bowel while reducing the pains, discomforts, and gas.
- Add in probiotics: Consuming foods that are rich in probiotics can assist the digestive tract to work properly and can further simplify the symptoms of proctitis. Make sure that the yoghurt you consume does not contain any large and heavy chunks of fruit and is soft enough to digest.
- Omega 3 fatty acids: Omega 3 fatty acids are a vital nutrient that can decrease the symptoms of proctitis while softening your bowel movements. Fishes like salmon, tuna contains high quantities of omega 3s and also contains anti-inflammatory properties that help in decreasing the pain and discomfort while maintaining your bowel movements.
- Add in plenty of fluids: Fluids like water, coconut water can help in the smooth function of the bowel and can also keep you hydrated while fuelling up your energy levels. You can consume juices of veggies and fruits but make sure that they are liquid and do not contain any pulp so that your body can easily digest it. Carbonated drinks, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided if you are suffering from proctitis.
- Avoid foods that are rich in sulfur or sulfites: Sulfur is a mineral that can create excess gas inside your stomach and can worsen the symptoms of proctitis. Sulphur is majorly found in foods like beer, wine, almonds, soy products, wheat pasta, pieces of bread, peanuts, raisins, and meats. Make sure to not include these foods in your diet if you are suffering from proctitis.
