Baked Ragi Chakli

Baked Ragi Chakli is a crunchy, savory snack made with a blend of nutrient-rich ragi and whole wheat flours, seasoned with aromatic spices and seeds. This baked version offers a healthier alternative to the traditional deep-fried chakli, delivering a satisfying crunch with a hint of spice and earthy flavor.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 60 grams ragi flour
  • 30 grams whole wheat flour
  • 15 grams sesame seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon carom seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Water

Procedure:

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ragi flour, whole wheat flour, sesame seeds, carom seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
  • Add the oil and mix well to incorporate it into the flour mixture.
  • Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead to form a smooth dough.
  • Divide the dough into small portions. Roll out each portion into a thin circle using a rolling pin.
  • Use a chakli maker or piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle to form chaklis on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you don’t have a chakli maker, you can also use a stencil to shape the chaklis.
  • Brush the chaklis lightly with oil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until they are crisp and golden brown. Flip halfway through baking for even crispness.
  • Allow the chaklis to cool completely before serving.

Nutritional Benefits:

    • Ragi (finger millet) is a powerhouse of nutrients, rich in calcium, iron, and dietary fiber, which supports bone health and digestion.
    • Whole wheat flour adds additional fiber and B-vitamins, enhancing overall nutritional value.
    • Sesame seeds contribute healthy fats, calcium, and antioxidants, while spices like cumin and carom seeds boost metabolism and aid digestion.
    • Baking instead of frying reduces the fat content, making these chaklis a healthier choice for a snack.
