Colon Cancer – What you need to know

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine which is also known as the colon. The colon is the final part of the digestive tract. Colon cancer may happen to anyone in any age group but it is mostly observed in older age groups. Since the Colon is the final digestive tract any hindrance in its function may prove to be fatal. Today we’ll talk about colon cancer and all we need to know about them so let’s get right into it.

What is colon cancer? How does it happen?
Colon cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine also known as the colon. Colon cancer can affect any age group but is generally found in people of older age groups. Colon cancer makes digestion difficult because it is the final digestive tract. Colon cancer starts with the formation of noncancerous (benign) clumps called polyps. When these clumps are not treated in time they turn into colon cancer cells.

Polyps are few and generally do not possess any symptoms, in rare cases, they may have few symptoms which are not enough to identify the problem and can be easily misunderstood as another cause. Due to such fewer symptoms, we and the doctors recommend getting regular check-ups so that it becomes easier to identify any symptoms and rectify it as soon as possible before it becomes fatal.

Though there are no certain causes identified by the doctors, it is known that colon cancer begins when healthy cells in the colon develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. Such mutations lead to irregular deformities in the cells which in turn replicate and create a mass of deformed cells thus leading to cancer.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer include:

  • A noticeable change in your bowel movements, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • Abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas, or pain
  • A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
