Horsegram Sesame Chutney

Horsegram Sesame Chutney is a nutritious and flavorful accompaniment that perfectly complements various Indian dishes. This chutney combines the earthy taste of horsegram with the nutty flavor of sesame seeds, creating a deliciously unique dip. It’s an excellent source of protein, making it a perfect choice for a healthy meal.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 40 grams horsegram (kollu), soaked for at least 4 hours
  • 20 grams sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1-2 chopped green chilies
  • 10 grams grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed
  • Fresh coriander leaves

Procedure:

  • Drain the soaked horsegram and cook it in a pressure cooker with enough water for about 2-3 whistles until soft. Alternatively, you can boil it in a pot until tender. Allow it to cool.
  • In a dry pan, lightly toast the sesame seeds over medium heat until they are golden and fragrant. Remove from heat and let them cool.
  • In a blender, combine the cooked horsegram, toasted sesame seeds, chopped green chilies, grated ginger, and salt. Blend until smooth, adding water as needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  • In a small pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Once they start popping, remove from heat.
  • Pour the tempering over the blended chutney and mix well. Adjust salt and consistency if needed.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve the horsegram sesame chutney with rice, dosa, or idli.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • Horsegram is a powerhouse of nutrition, rich in protein, dietary fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals, including iron and calcium. It has been shown to aid in weight management, improve digestion, and support heart health.
  • The addition of sesame seeds adds healthy fats and antioxidants, enhancing overall nutrition.
  • This chutney is not only tasty but also promotes healthy skin and bones due to the presence of nutrients from both horsegram and sesame seeds. It’s a wholesome option for those looking to incorporate more legumes and seeds into their diet while enjoying a flavorful condiment.
