Til Modak

Til Modak is a traditional Indian sweet often made during festivals like Makar Sankranti and Ganesh Chaturthi. These delightful dumplings are made with rice flour and filled with a nutty mixture of sesame seeds, coconut, and jaggery, offering a perfect balance of flavors and textures. They are not only delicious but also nutritious, making them a wholesome treat.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 60 grams rice flour
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoons jaggery
  • 2 teaspoons grated coconut
  • 2 teaspoons ghee
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Water (as needed for dough)

Procedure:

  • In a pan, dry roast the sesame seeds on low heat until they become fragrant and lightly golden. Remove from heat and let them cool. In a mixing bowl, combine the roasted sesame seeds, grated coconut, grated jaggery, cardamom powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to form a filling. Set aside.
  • In a separate pan, heat 100 grams of water and bring it to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the rice flour, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture forms a smooth dough. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  • SGrease your palms with a little ghee. Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it into a small disc, about 3-4 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of the sesame filling in the center and carefully fold the edges to form a pointed top, shaping it like a modak. Repeat this process with the remaining dough and filling.
  • Arrange the shaped modaks in a steamer or idli maker. Steam for about 10-12 minutes until they are cooked through and slightly glossy.
  • Let the modaks cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • Til Modaks are packed with essential nutrients, particularly from sesame seeds, which are an excellent source of calcium, iron, and healthy fats. The high calcium content in sesame seeds supports bone health, while the iron aids in maintaining healthy blood levels.
  • Jaggery, used as a sweetener, provides vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins and potassium, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugar.
  • Rice flour offers easily digestible carbohydrates, providing energy. The addition of grated coconut enhances flavor and adds fiber, promoting digestive health. Overall, Til Modaks are a nourishing dessert that not only satisfies sweet cravings but also contributes to a balanced diet.
