Introducing the Dimensions of Mental Health

Do you often feel disappointed, energy-less and stressed out? If yes, then maybe it’s time to pay heed to your mental health. Right from your sleeping pattern, relationships to physical health- your mental health can affect various areas of your life and therefore managing your mental health by balancing the dimensions is quite imperative. Your mental health is the amalgamation of emotional, psychological and social well-being and it can influence your choices, decisions and feelings while taking a toll on your overall health and well-being. Let’s start with the basics to safeguard your mental health. Here we bring you the 4 basic dimensions of mental health that you should focus on:

  • Thoughts: Your thoughts play an active role in deciding your mental health. Alterations in your thoughts can affect your mental health. When you think positive, you will definitely feel well and it becomes easy to view life in a balanced and constructive way. Similarly, when you do not think positively, you will not feel well and it becomes easy to view each and everything while ignoring the positive aspect of things going on in your life. Make sure to switch your thoughts into positive ones to safeguard your mental health. For example, instead of thinking something really bad is going to happen, think, I know that I can get through whatever happened to me and everything will be fine.
  • Body reactions: Your body reactions to certain thoughts are another thing that affects your mental health. When your body reacts to negative thoughts, your bodily functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, brain chemicals, hormones and more get increased which only creates stress and hampers your mental health.
  • Behaviours: Your behaviour and mental health are directly linked with each other. Behaviour is the way you act/respond to your situation. Harmful behaviour in a difficult situation can only do harm to your mental health. For example, isolating yourself, consuming alcohol to find a solution for a problem whereas a helpful behaviour like working on a solution, practising activities that enhance cognitive health will cut down your stress levels while enhancing mental health.
  • Emotion: Changes in emotions go together with mental health. An enormous part of emotions is the way you feel. Emotions can be pleasing, unkind or mixed. Like, frustration or sadness can hamper your mental health while happiness or joy can bring you peace and calmness. Make sure that you do try to see the positive in every emotion to safeguard your mental health.
