Mock Meat: Healthy Or Another Fad

A fad is like a trend that comes and goes. These fad diets are said to be baseless with no research history. People introduce what they feel is helping them lose weight in the short term. But there is no evidence that these diets are successful and most importantly sustainable. Fads also lack nutrients or just focus on one aspect of the food.
Another trend we are seeing nowadays is mock meat. Mock meat is a substitute and replica of meat. It is a vegetarian or vegan alternative to non-vegetarian meat. It can take on the qualities of meat, in the feel, taste, and appearance. People often look up to the mock meat when either is allergic or when they want to switch to healthier and plant-friendly options.
Health Benefits Of Mock Meat:
- Low-calorie content
- Low saturated fat
- High in nutrients like iron and vitamin B12
- High in fiber
- Good source of protein
The biggest advantage we can see is that they are sustainable and planet friendly. Mock meats do not harm any animal and are made from plant-based products like wheat gluten, quinoa, or soy. Additionally, they are low in saturated fats as compared to actual meats. Saturated fats in many types of meat can increase the cholesterol levels in the body and be harmful to the body when consumed in large quantities. Mock meats even replicate the nutrient qualities of actual meats and are pro for non-meat-eaters.
On the contrary, we can see that any alternative cannot beat the original product. Similarly, mock meats may include certain chemicals and additives that can add extra guilt to the body. A great amount of sodium is even added to the preparation of these plant-based processed products. They also can not beat the protein content we find in real meat. For people who are either allergic to gluten, or looking for alternatives that are gluten-free, mock meat is not a plus point anyways.
If mock meats are a fad or not, it is on you to decide. An alternative that is sustainable and good for the planet, is definitely a plus point. But researches are yet to be made whether these are healthy for the human system, in the long run, or not.
Footnote:
Mock meats are a blessing for religious vegetarians, they can feel and taste an alternative to meat without even having a pang of guilt. But choose wisely and see for the ingredients that go into your mock meat.
