Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Triggers And Prevention For Better Management

INTRODUCTION
We get irritated and frustrated in our day-to-day lives but real anxiety kicks in when our own gut starts to irritate us. When everybody is enjoying the party, you are sitting all by yourself wondering what is up with your stomach. Sometimes, it gets worse and you have to call for medical help. You might be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).Cramping, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating are some common symptoms associated with IBS. Well, there are few things you could do to help relieve the symptoms, let’s take a look:
TRIGGERS
In dietetics, we always suggest to the patients about what not to do prior to what to do as trigger moments can aggravate the condition, you don’t want to mess the messier. So, here are some triggers you can avoid:
- Manage your stress: – Our gut is controlled by our brain to a great extent via gut-brain axis thus what we think can leave an impact on our gut health. Which is why you feel butterflies flying in your stomach prior to something special like your interview for the job you’ve always dreamt of, similarly, when we overthink our nervous systems hampers with our gut therefore causing it to become more active. Try to handle the situation by certain methods like counting 1-10.
- Watch out on some foods: – There are certain foods that can trigger IBS. Examples of these foods include;
- High-fat foods
- Carbonated drinks
- Beans
- Alcohol
- Chocolate
- Milk
- Spicy foods
- Raw fruits
- Cabbage
- Broccoli
These are some common foods that can worsen the situation but you should know what foods exactly disturb you according to your symptoms. Try to note down all the foods that are not good for you in your notepad.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN…
You can practice certain things to help manage your IBS better. Here are some few tips given under:
- Manage your anxiety: – As mentioned earlier, stress can be a major factor to triggering IBS. Try to calm yourself before anything serious happens such as meditation, write your anger in a diary, count 1-10, etc.
- Sleep like a baby: – Not getting enough sleep can even worsen your IBS. Try sleeping and waking up on time, avoid daytime napping, have some warm milk an hour before bedtime.
- Avoid messy plates: – Eating fast, eating while driving and eating too much can lead to further problems.
