5 Psoriasis Triggers And How To Handle Flare-Ups

Psoriasis is a condition that causes red, itchy scaly patches on the skin, commonly on the knees, scalp, elbows, and neck. It goes through cycles, with flare-ups lasting a few weeks or months, then diminishing or going into remission. The different types of psoriasis are Pustular psoriasis, Guttate psoriasis, Inverse psoriasis, Erythrodermic psoriasis, and some people may also develop Psoriatic Arthritis. It is a non-communicable but an auto-immune disease and there are some triggers that disturb a normal lifestyle.

Symptoms differ from persona to person, depending upon the stage or type of psoriasis. Common symptoms include plaques of scales on the scalp, silver-colored scales, appear to be plaques on red skin, itchy, painful, scalp, or affected skin areas, discoloration or detachment of nails from the nail bed, swelling or stiffness in joints, and burning or soreness.

Here Are Some Psoriasis Triggers:

  • Infections- skin or throat infection can trigger the symptoms of psoriasis.
  • Weather- dry and cold weather make the condition go worse, while sunny weather help soothe the symptoms.
  • Stress- the body reacts to stress and cause the skin to behave abnormally.
  • Injury- any injury on the skin like cut, bug bite, sunburn, scrape can worsen the condition.
  • Tobacco or Alcohol- heavy consumption of addictive substances can worsen the psoriasis condition and cause more flare-ups.
  • Medication- certain medication like corticosteroids or birth control pills can trigger the symptoms.

Some Ways To Handle Flare-Ups:

  • Moisturize- skin that is too dry or itchy can make for a good ground for the bacteria to grow. So, moisturizing your skin with lotions, oils, jellies will help misten the surface and prevent dryness and itchyness, hence the symptoms.
  • Avoid Cold Weather- as discussed earlier, cold weather makes the skin dry and can flare-up the symptoms of this condition. And when exposed to such weather, moisturize and cover yourself well.
Avoid Medications- see for the medications that trigger your symptoms and avoid them.
  • Hummidifer- a humidifier will prevent the environment from becoming dry and keep your skin moist.
  • Be Careful With Injuries- injury like cut, scrapes, bumps, bug bites, etc. gives the skin trauma that can cause infections and infections are not at all freidnly with psoriasis.
  • No Stress- the body cannot handle stress well, same with the skin. Don’t put your body under too much tension, breathe, relax, get some sun to zap away the stress.
  • Get Some Sun- a warm climate or environment can help soothe the symptoms and of course, vitmain D is too good for the skin. But be careful about the time, do not sit for too long as it may worsen the contion.
  • Exercise Enough- excess weight can trigger the symptoms, so exercising and removing the toxins can really help you live a healthy and manageable lifestyle.

Over To You:
Taking good care of your body by exercising, providing the right nutrtiion, and the skin by moisturizing, never picking the patches up, and trimming nails regularly can really help manage this condition.
