Eating home cooked food: Why is it as good as fancy diets

Someone had correctly said – “Happiness is homemade”.

But how many of us eat homemade food very often. Half a century back, our grandmothers used to cook everything at home, including making fresh masalas for curries, dals and sambars.

That taste was beyond comparison. Do we get the same taste now? Not even close.

It is a matter of convenience resulting from a fast paced life where a click of a button can get your meals on the table.

Given below is the comparison of home cooked Vs fancy meals.

Home cooked Fancy RTE
  1. Upma
  2. Poha
  3. Ambli/porridge
  4. Idli/dosa/dhokla
  5. Parathas
  6. Poori bhaji
  1. Muesli
  2. Instant oats
  3. Fruits smoothie
  4. Ready to eat cereal flakes
  5. Quick to make noodles
  6. Bakery items
End result: energy and protein rich food to keep you going till lunch time. Good addition of micronutrients, balanced meal to keep the energy levels high, prevent obesity or hunger pangs End result: feeling of satisfaction missing at the end of the meal, food high in salt, sugar, preservatives but low on fiber, micronutrients. Causes cravings and resultant overeating at the next meal

People also follow various celebrities for the type of diet they follow. Many fancy diets were trending which backfired for many people. Some of the diet trends were – General motors diet, juice diet, only fruits diet etc.

These fancy diets were deficient in many nutrients and following them in the long run increased the risk of many diseases like osteoporosis, anemia, fatigue, hidden hunger due to micronutrient deficiency.

Eating a balanced diet at home can prove to be more beneficial to health as compared to following these fancy diets.

  • Home cooked meals are balanced in nutrition

Eating a plate containing dal-chawal, sabzi, salad and curd gives the body the right proportion of macro and micro nutrients. Also since the meal is freshly prepared, not stored & reheated, we can get maximum nutrition from it.

  • Detox diet – a fad

Detox diet is the latest fat diet followed by many people – only juice diet, only fruit diet etc etc, thinking that such diets help to detoxify the blood and improve our health.

The reality is our body has its own mechanism to detox, that involves the liver which removes the excess fat, toxins, chemicals and kidney that eliminates the microbes, end products of digestion and excess water.

A good way to ensure that the liver and kidney does a proper job of detoxification is by eating a diet rich in fiber, low in saturated fat, and hydrating well. This can be easily achieved by eating a home cooked meal that includes local and seasonal food.

  • Simple meals = good gut health

A bowl of khichdi and a glass of buttermilk is all that it takes to have a gut friendly meal. Instead of following a diet trend for a healthy gut where you are taking a smoothie with prebiotic powder, taking a porridge with raw onion and curd based provides both pre & probiotic food that maintains our gut health and prevents diseases like IBS, leaky gut, constipation etc.

Bottom line is, stop running behind fads and fancy diets. Our mothers and grandmothers lived a good quality of life by cooking and eating at home.

It is time to go back to our roots and try to eat more home cooked meals and rely less on ready to eat so called healthy foods or on fancy diets that claim to give you good health.
