Whilst there are plenty of different types of yogurts available out there, few of them captivate the eyes of people and are mostly preferred by the public while going through the lane of supermarkets. Greek and Greek-style yogurt are two such authentic type of yogurt that always tops the list of many fitness enthusiasts and due to which both of them have gained much momentum in recent years. But do you know about what made them different from one another? Which one is healthy and which one to pick from both of them to get the proper nutrients?
Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is prepared by the process of straining which removes its excess watery whey while leaving a thicker and nutrient-rich consistency behind which is not found in unstrained yogurt. Greek yogurt is strained and is extremely low in sugar than any other form of yogurt. The process of removing whey leaves a creamy and thick version of yogurt, usually with a tart taste. The straining of Greek yogurt is actually done twice but when it is strained thrice then we call it ‘traditional Greek yogurt.’ One of the best traits of Greek yogurt is- due to its process of straining it is low in lactose and those who feel difficult to consume dairy products can easily consume Greek yogurt without giving any second thoughts. There are various health benefits of consuming Greek yogurt. This type of yogurt offers various nutrients like calcium, protein, probiotics, iodine and Vitamin B12 which is extremely beneficial for the overall health and wellbeing. However, Greek yogurt that is labelled as low or no-fat cannot provide any health benefits as they are added with flavours and milk powders.
Here are some great health benefits that Greek yogurt provides
- Improve bone health
- Keeps you full for a longer period of time
- Boost metabolism
- Improve gut health
- Build muscle mass
- Low blood pressure
Greek-style yogurt
The process of Greek and Greek-style yogurt is almost the same. But Greek-style yogurt is filled with added milk powders to make it thicker and to make its texture to look like a real and healthy one. It does not hold any nutritional value as it is rich in cream, gelatine, gum blends, stabilisers, preservatives, milk solids and more and does not offer any potential health benefits to the human body. Many people think that both the Greek and Greek-style yogurt is the same and seeing the fancy label of Greek-style yogurt they often pick and choose it. But Greek-style yogurt is not as beneficial as the Greek yogurt and can also be problematic for the sufferers of lactose intolerance.
Footnote
Although the starting process of both the Greek and Greek-style yogurt is the same, Greek yogurt is the healthier version and can provide potent health benefits because of its fine straining. It is one of the nutrient-dense versions and is low in sugar which makes it a great option to choose. Greek-style yogurt contains various unhealthy flavours and milk powder and hence falling for it can never do any good for your health. So, now you know what to pick whenever you go from the aisles of grocery shopping?
