We are always surrounded by worms–primarily roundworm, whipworm and hookworm. No matter how sanitized your environment is there is always a risk of getting a worm infection especially in children. To spread awareness about the seriousness of worm infection we recognize 10th February as the National Deworming Day to spread awareness about the significance of deworming. Today in the light of national deworming day we will look at 5 Steps we can take to make children worm-free.
Why are worms harmful?
Intestinal worms are parasitic. This means that they feast on the nutrition of their host–your child. This may eventually lead to malnutrition in the child, impair growth, and lead to issues such as anemia, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea, recurrent tummy pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. All these symptoms are the result of the parasitic nature of the worms, the worms suck the nutrition out of the body and sustain themselves, under severe conditions the worms begin to reproduce thus increasing the symptoms and discomfort in the child. Due to these reasons, it is important to identify any worm infection as soon as possible and treat it accordingly.
5 Steps to make your child Worm-Free.
- Wash their hands well with soap after playing outdoors or with pets, after passing stools, and before every meal. Worms are present everywhere and children are innocent and careless so unknowingly they come in contact with these worms. This makes washing hands very important to avoid any entry of worms into the digestive tract of the child.
- Stay hygienic. Worms prefer dirty and unhygienic places to sustain and reproduce. Prolonged exposure to unhygienic places might become the reason to worm infection.
- Wash feet properly with soap, especially if they’ve been playing barefoot outdoors. Yes, wash feet because worms are very minute and may even enter from the gap between nails and skin. Don’t let your child play barefoot in unhygienic outdoor places and if they do then make them wash their feet thoroughly.
- Uncooked food items often have bacterias and worms because of no cleansing. Hence Don’t let them eat unwashed fruits/salads or undercooked meats. Always wash every food item before consuming it. It is also recommended to cook the food items to kill any residual germs or worms.
- Drink safe, clean water, and steer clear of street food and beverages. Don’t let your kid have any liquid you don’t trust. If possible limit your child to purified water as much as possible.
