7 Best Foods to Cleanse Your Liver

The liver is the largest organ of the body. It plays a lot of vital functions in our body; from removing toxins, breaking down alcohol to detoxifying blood and production of proteins and cholesterol. While the liver cleanses our body, it is important to cleanse the liver too.

Feeling low in energy or sluggish can also mean that it’s high time you look after your liver and include or exclude certain foods. But you don’t need to go on any 7-day detoxifying diet or something of that matter. The liver cleanses itself naturally, just a few changes in your lifestyle or basically your diet can help cleanse your body naturally.

With a good diet, it is important to reduce the intake of processed foods, sugar, alcohol, drugs, caffeine, and fatty foods for a healthy liver.

Here Are Few Foods Which Help in Cleansing Your Liver:

  • Green Leafy Vegetables- They are known for their cleansing properties as they have chlorophyll and soak up toxins from the bloodstream. These vegetables are also light on the stomach and can be easily included in our diets. They include spinach, kale, coriander, celery, etc.
  • Fruits & Berries- Most of the fruits contain vitamin C which is good for detoxification. For example, grapefruit, oranges and lime have antioxidants that protect the liver by reducing inflammation. Berries like blueberries and cranberries have anthocyanins that act as antioxidants.
  • Garlic- It is filled with antibacterial properties and works on eliminating toxins from the body. Garlic also has selenium which activates liver detoxifying enzymes.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables- Fibre is essential to cleanse out your whole body starting with the liver and these vegetables are loaded with fibre. Vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts have glutathione which triggers cleansing enzymes. Cruciferous vegetables help flush out toxins and carcinogens from the body.
  • Olive Oil- Studies have shown that olive oil increases the antioxidant properties of enzymes. So, it is better to switch to olive oil from other kinds of oils which promote fatty liver.
  • Turmeric- Turmeric is one of the most important spices to have in your kitchen. The curcumin in turmeric repairs the liver cells and eliminates toxins. It also protects against liver damage and the production of bile.
  • Nuts- Nuts especially walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids and glutathione that help in cleansing the liver naturally and improve levels of liver enzymes.

Footnote:
Apart from these foods, it is important to have an adequate number of fluids to cleanse out your liver of any toxins. Have about 8 glasses of water throughout the day. Exercise regularly as it will also help detoxify the body and reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.
