Role of Diet in Sjogren Syndrome

Sjogren’s syndrome is a chronic auto-immune disorder, in which the body’s own immune system attacks the healthy parts of the body. This affects the moisture in the body leading to dryness in the mouth, throat, eyes, skin, vagina, and other organs.
Common Symptoms of Sjorgen’s Disease are
- Joint Pain
- Swelling
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Dry Mouth
- Dry Eyes
- Dry Skin
- Dry Vaginal

Sjorgen’s Syndrome Diet
An anti-inflammatory diet is suggested for Sjorgen’s Syndrome as it helps to reduce inflammation triggers.
- Foods to Avoid – Eliminating inflammatory causing foods like reduction in the swelling, joint pains, and triggers. Inflammation causing foods like –
- Red Meat, Processed Foods, Refined Carbohydrates, Trans Fat, Artificial Sweeteners, Dairy, Soda, Gluten.
- Include More Fruits and Vegetables – Including more fruits and vegetables will help in increasing the intake of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. This helps in reducing the inflammation in the body and symptoms are reduced. Fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables act as anti-inflammatory foods and help in reducing flare-ups.
- Spices and Herbs – Various herbs and spices have anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing the symptoms of Sjogren’s Syndrome. These herbs and spices include Ginger, Garlic, and Turmeric.
- Include Omega 3-Rich Foods – Foods like Nuts, Flax Seeds, Avocado, and Olive Oil are good sources of Omega 3 that fight against inflammation. They are also a source of healthy fats and must be included in the daily diet.
- Include More Liquid – Sjorgen’s Syndrome’s most common symptoms are dryness. It becomes important to include more moist foods like soups, juices, smoothies, and curries in meals during the day. One should ensure being well hydrated by sufficient intake of water.
