During our life, we may have encountered scents that take us back to some memories attached to it. It is a plant or motor oil scent, whatever the source maybe there is always a memory attached to it which is why we recall it whenever our nose identifies that particular scent. Such scent provokes our brain to revisit that memory and triggers a corresponding emotion. The information about smell comes immediately to the limbic system of the brain, which includes regions like the amygdala that control emotional reactions and memory.
