Blood Donation: The Gift of Life

A low blood count is a prevalent problem these days. The body’s blood count being low means your RBC (Red Blood Corpuscles) is present in sub-optimal concentration or hemoglobin level in the blood decreases. The condition is also known as anemia frequently found in women. Having a low blood count prevents the body from performing its essential metabolic activities and also makes one lethargic and fatigued. Foods that increase blood count are –
1- Iron-Rich Foods – Food products such as green leafy vegetables such as spinach, tofu, eggs, whole grains, pulses, red meat, fish, dry fruits which are rich in iron.
2- Vitamin C-rich foods – the body does not absorb iron directly and requires a medium to absorb it well. Here vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus family members such as oranges, lemon, berries, grapefruits, tomatoes are very useful.
3- Folic Acid – Folic acid is a vitamin B complex that is necessary to make red blood cells and hemoglobin. It is found in bananas, peanuts, broccoli, sprouts, and few more food items.
4- Pomegranate – It is a storehouse of iron along with other vital nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber. It is one of the best foods to boost hemoglobin production. It also has antioxidant properties which ensure proper blood circulation in the body.
5- Dates – This dry fruit is rich in carbohydrates and a good source of iron. It helps in increasing hemoglobin and blood oxygen levels in the body. However, it is to be taken in adequate quantity as excess may lead to blood sugar levels rising leading to diabetes.
6- Beetroot – It has very high amounts of iron, potassium, folic acid, and fiber. It can be made in a juice for easy consumption and given to any age group. It is a very good antioxidant and leads to a stable blood flow in the body.
7- Legumes – It includes lentils, peas, beans, and peanuts which help in increasing hemoglobin levels significantly.Iron and folic acid also boost the production of red blood cells.
8- Watermelon – It is a whole food that contains iron along with vitamin C which makes iron production and absorption faster and better.
9- Copper-rich foods – Food products such as poultry, shellfish, cherries, and liver are necessary as they help the red blood cells replicate and utilize the iron.
10- Iron supplements – A person with an extremely low level of hemoglobin is required to take supplements. It is important to note that overdosing may lead to liver diseases.
Foods containing tannins, oxalic acids, and polyphenols such as coffee, tea, soy products hinder iron absorption in the body and as such are better to avoid while RBC count is low.
Therefore, as healthy human beings, we should take of ourselves and think of donating blood to help others in dire need.
