Tea has been found in our culture for over 4000 years. It is said that major trade routes were discovered in search of tea, wars happened because of tea. A lot of wars were settled and major policies were made over tea. There’s nothing that a cup of tea can’t solve. So why is it so important? Why is steeping budding leaves in hot water and having that liquid so important?
A lot of studies over time have shown the health benefits of tea. Teas are known to give a boost to the human immune system, help in prevention of cancers, reduce and prevent inflammation, while being beneficial for cardiovascular health. Tea is enriched with specific antioxidants known as polyphenols.
In an increasing trend in India, there is a large shift from regular milk and sugar tea and oxygenated black tea towards health tea.
Benefits of drinking herbal tea
Some of the most popular herbal teas are:- Green tea, white tea, black tea with ginger.
White Tea– Originally from China, this is the most delicate form of tea. It is also the least processed. White tea has high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols. It is also a rich source of fluoride, catechins and tannins. White tea has the least amount of caffeine. But white tea is also known to cause dizziness, trigger insomnia and gastric discomfort in some people.
Green tea– Originally from Japan and China, the tea leaves here were pan roasted or steamed. This tea has high benefits. It is high in flavonoids that are responsible for heart health. It also reduces the bad cholesterol and incidences of blood clotting. It is also beneficial in controlling cholesterol. It has a higher level of caffeine than white tea. A lot of green tea may impair liver functions and cause headaches.
Black tea– They also contain antioxidant properties like polyphenols, including catechins, theaflavins, and thearubigins. It helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It has lower flavonoids than green tea, but the amounts are still helpful to support the heart. Black tea contains many microbial fauna that can help fight infection and promote gut health. They also help reduce hypertension and diabetic surges.
But, black tea has a lot of caffeine and that is a major point against it.
While, these are the benefits of all three teas, you may pick and choose a tea. But we at NmamiLife believe, why should we invest in such expensive teas and that too not native to us. For the anti-oxidant and flavonoid benefits we can have cinnamon tea, or ginger tea, make a concoction of many herbs and steep and have them. It is not necessary to invest in foreign teas for antioxidant benefits.
