Guru Purnima is one of the sacred festivals celebrated by almost all religions in India. On this day devotees pay gratitude to the Gurus who are considered close to God. Gurus are the ones who free us from ignorance and remove darkness from our minds. This festival falls on the full moon day in the month of Ashad as per the Hindu calendar.
On this Day, students or disciples worship the guru by doing puja, offering fruits, flowers, some traditional dishes, and Guru Dakshina. In return students or disciples take blessings from them, so that power and knowledge of the world can be achieved
Following Are The Dishes To Celebrate This Auspicious Occasion
- Panchamrit – Panchamrit is the most traditional dish offered in puja. It is a mixture of 5 ingredients, which is believed to have medicinal properties and increase immunity. This is a very simple recipe; in a bowl add 1 cup milk, 1 Tsp. Honey, 1 Tsp. Ghee, 2 Tsp. Curd and 1 Tsp. Sugar. Whisk all the ingredients well. You can also add a pinch of Cardamon powder or a few strands of Saffron for extra flavor.
- Halwa – Halwa is again the most traditional and authentic dish prepared and offered for Pooja or Celebration. Halwa can be made of different flavors, with fresh fruits like pineapple, and mango. To make halwa healthy, suji can be replaced with ragi, sugar can be replaced with jaggery. This would make the dish Iron and Calcium rich. Moong dal halwa is also most relished and is healthy.
- Poori and Channa – Poori and channa though are included on regular days too, but hold special importance on the auspicious occasions. Deep-fried Puri though is not considered healthy, but always remember portion control is the key. Special occasions are to be enjoyed without restricting what to eat and controlling how much to eat.
- Kheer – No festival or occasion is complete without dessert and Kheer is on the topmost list among Indian Desserts. Kheer is a mouth-watering dish and easy to make. A healthy version of Kheer can be made out of Oats, Almond Milk, and Jaggery. Adding Cardamom powder and Saffron makes the kheer flavorsome and delicious.
- Sabudana Khichdi – On the day of Guru Purnima, many disciples observe a fast. Sabudana khichdi is one such dish prepared and consumed during religious fasts. Sago Balls (Sabudana) and Potatoes are rich in resistant starch and provide energy.
