Pinched nerves

Pinched nerves occur when the surrounding tissues apply too much pressure on the nerves which disrupts the nerves and restricts its function.

When the nerve is pinched, it does not get all the nutrients and it starts to lose its ability to send signals to the brain.

Causes:

  • Herniated disc – A herniated disk is also known as a slipped, ruptured or bulging disk. It’s one of the most common causes of neck, back and leg pain.
  • Spinal stenosis – it is a condition where the space inside the backbone is small putting additional pressure on the spine and the nerves passing through it.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – due to swollen wrist tendons and nerves
  • Compression of nerves in the lower part of the spine leading to pain in the back muscles.
  • Compression of nerves in the neck causing shoulder pain and pain in one side of the arm
  • Pinched nerves can also result due to trauma to the nerves.

Symptoms

  • Sharp burning pain
  • Tingling or needles & pins sensation in the back/neck/arm
  • Muscle spasm in the back that radiates to the leg
  • Pain in neck which radiates to other part of the body
  • Discomfort especially while sleeping
  • Chronic pain that lasts for an extended period of time.

Treatment

It is required to take the help of a physiotherapist who can assess the problem, find the cause and give the right kind of treatment that will improve the mobility and reduce the pain.

Some of the treatment options include –

  • Alternating between hot and cold pack to get relief from pain
  • Try to avoid any heavy work or lifting any heavy objects
  • Mild stretches and movement
  • Plenty of rest
  • Proper medications if required
  • Good hydration and intake of an anti-inflammatory diet.
