Another COVID variant has struck and we couldn’t be more terrified. Who would want to quarantine themselves if they got exposed to Omicron?
No one I suppose, and that is why you should get a jab of precaution dose AKA booster dose.
Government has been working tirelessly since the beginning of COVID and it never fails to impress us on such occasions.
Why Covid-19 vaccination & booster dose?
The covid-19 vaccination have been tested & proven to be effective in reducing the severity of the infection and probability of contracting the virus.
A booster dose is needed in addition to the previous shot as the protection provided by earlier dose starts to decrease with time. It helps to maintain immunity for a longer period and thus protect from the virus.
Who is eligible?
- Government launched a precautionary dose for health and frontline workers, people aged 60 and above with comorbidities on 10th of January to help fight the new variant.
- Reminder messages have already been sent to over 10 million people who are eligible thus encouraging them to come forward and get the precaution dose.
- Although you can go to CoWIN and book an appointment for booster dose, there really is no need as the Health Ministry has said, “those who are eligible can directly walk into any vaccination center and get an onsite appointment”.
- Individuals aged 60 and above with comorbidities are not required to produce any certificate form their doctors. However they should consult their doctors before getting the third dose of vaccine.
When to get the third dose?
- According to the Health Ministry, there should be at least a 9 months gap between the date of administration of the second dose and the precaution dose.
- Also, there would be no mix-and-match of vaccines for the booster dose i.e. the third dose will be the same vaccine the people have received for their first and second doses.
- This means that those who have received the first two doses of Covaxin will get the same and those who got Covishield will get it as the third dose too.
- People will receive SMS once they get vaccinated with booster dose and the same will be updated on the CoWIN portal as they had received for their 1st and 2nd doses.
This becomes crucially important for people who are vulnerable as studies have shown that the precaution dose can boost a person’s resistance to Omicron by as much as 88 percent.
