Herd Immunity is the immunity or protection that protects the population which is not immune to the infection by the population which is immune to the infection. In the case of COVID-19 in Delhi the amount of population which is now immune to the virus is now a protective layer for the population which is not immune to the virus, this is known as herd immunity or Herd protection. In Delhi, the case is similar, reports and surveys suggest that Delhi is near to attaining Herd Immunity. Here is all you need to know as of today.

Delhi and herd immunity
The outcome of the fifth round of seroprevalence survey has indicated that the Delhi population could be heading towards attaining herd immunity against COVID-19 infection as of 25th January. These surveys took place in the 11 districts of Delhi and found that some districts had developed antibodies for the virus as high as 50%. This is a significant number because it increases the protection for the non-immune population and breaks the chain of infection.

When any virus doesn’t meet any resistance it spreads at a quicker rate. Herd Immunity acts as resistance to the virus thereby decreasing the infection and breaking the chain of infection. Professionals and experts in viral infection surveys state that if any area has antibodies in 50-60% of the population then that area is considered to have developed herd immunity. Herd immunity implies that in any set of people in a community a lot many of them become immune to it on account of antibodies developed in response to it. And, hence, such people become a protective layer between the infected person and the unaffected people, thereby breaking the chain of viral transmission.
