United Nations Tweeted About The Impact Of Climate Crisis On People’s Health:

Climate crisis or change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity, according to the UN. Unhealthy levels of air pollution, largely resulting from burning fossil fuels, transportation, production, and packaging of food systems that emit greenhouse gas drive climate change. Health systems are the main line of defence for populations faced with emerging health threats, including climate change.

The impacts are already harming health through air pollution, disease, extreme weather events, forced displacement, food insecurity, and pressures on mental health.

The Impact Of Climate Crisis On People’s Health Is:

  • Respiratory Disease- the pollutants in the air can decrease the functioning of lungs and cause lung damage, which results in difficulty in breathing. Change in climate can cause damaged cells in respiratory disease and make the lungs work harder to supply oxygen to the body.
  • Cardiovascular Disease- increased pollution will cause pollutants to damage the cells and affect heart functioning. High temperatures can cause an increase in blood viscosity and an increase in heart attacks or heart failures.
  • Extreme Weather Events- climate change often results in global warming, more heatwaves, droughts, floods, glacier melting, lightning, etc. All of these events can cause many unexpected health problems to humans.
  • Forced Displacement- forced displacement is when people are forced to move from their places or leave their homes and shelter, because of extreme weather events, in search of better shelter. People relocate in search of better shelter and resources usually due to hunger, flooding, drought, earthquake, etc.
  • Food Insecurity- climate crisis can reduce freshwater availability and also food production. Natural calamities cause scarcity of food and increase insecurity among people. Destruction of agriculture can cause job insecurity too.
  • Pressure On Mental Health- due to lack of food, shelter, and jobs people can face pressure on mental health. Change in the global climate causes depression, anxiety and even post-traumatic stress.

Climate change can lead to more severe diseases in the future and must be taken care of. Health societies rely on well-functioning ecosystems to provide clean air, freshwater medicines and food security. These help to limit diseases and stabilize the climate. But biodiversity loss is happening at an unprecedented rate, impacting human health worldwide and increasing the risk of emerging infectious diseases.

Footnote:

We can try and reduce air pollution that causes climate crisis. Alternatives like walking, and cycling are not only green but also offer major health benefits, as they reduce the risk of many chronic health conditions and improve mental health.
