Physical activity refers to any movement which involves joints, muscles, and even the brain. There are various kinds of activities like cycling, walking, wheeling, sports, active recreation, and play – to name a few. It does not matter what kind of movement you opt for, or a specific kind of movement will benefit you more. Any kind of physical activity can help boost your quality and quantity of life.
According to WHO, one in four adults and 81% of adolescents do not engage enough in physical activity. Levels of inactivity increase and can be as high as 70% as countries develop economically, due to changing transport patterns, increased use of technology for work and recreation, cultural values, and increasing sedentary behaviours.
Maybe wearing a smartwatch and counting the number of steps would be an activity for one person whereas running every day in the morning for another. From cycling to swimming every physical activity counts and makes your life a little better with every count.
WHO Tweeted That Regular Exercise Can Improve All Aspects Of Your Lives, From Preventing Diseases To Boosting Mental Health, Like:
- With longer hours of sitting nowadays, we all tend to face muscle stiffness and joint aches, which can lead to many ailments. A little activity after every few hours can help refresh the body.
- While you exercise, certain hormones are produced by the body which are called happy hormones like endorphins, that help you feel better. Physical activity also helps relieve stress and boost mental health by refreshing the mind.
- Lack of physical activity can cause you to gain weight and fall prey to obesity. Obesity brings many more diseases like heart disease, stroke, several cancers, and diabetes.
- Lack of physical activity can deteriorate your bone health and make you prone to osteoporosis. Doing strengthening exercises will make your bones and muscles stronger.
- All the sedentary behaviours are degrading the quality of life and making children of all age groups prone to diseases that were not even there decades ago.
- Being more physically active can boost the country’s economic value too, as children, adolescents or even adults will participate more in sports and all kinds of recreational activity rather than being on their phones.
A healthy country includes healthy individuals. Increased levels of physical inactivity can have a negative impact on health systems, environment, economy, and community and individual well-being. Physical activity is not a separate entity, it includes all kinds of exercises and sports be it physical or mental. Looking after your body means looking after your entire life. Our body does so much for us, the least we can do is practice enough movement that all the body parts are functioning optimally.
