Autumn Dietary Checklist Do’s and Don’ts

Autumn is here and with this change of season, it is advised that you should change your diet and align it with nature’s clock. With the world already in an ongoing battle with the novel coronavirus, it is better to plan your diets according to the season in order to prevent yourself from falling ill. Read on to find out the autumn dietary checklist do’s and don’ts.

The Do’s:

  • Include root-vegetables and fruits in your diet:
  • Including root-vegetables and regional fruits can help you keep your body fit during autumn. They have anti-inflammatory properties that can help in fighting the free radical damage in the body, while are also rich in fibre, antioxidants, and other various micronutrients. Think of including apples, pears, cabbages, wild mushrooms, pomegranates, carrots, and turnips in your diet for the season.

  • Include natural herbs:
  • Warm herbs and spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg help in maintaining the body temperature and have various balancing properties. You can also include amla, ashwagandha, shatavari, ginger, cumin, parsley and oregano for their hearty and detoxifying actions. You can consume them in the form of concoction or add it in your foods to get effective results.

  • Include proteins:
  • Protein is an essential macronutrient that is needed for every body part or tissue. It is made from building blocks called amino acids. And there is a wide range of options from which you can choose from like, fatty fish, eggs, lentils, whole grains like chickpea, oats, barley, or quinoa, beans like black beans or mung beans, and dairy products in your diet will help you meet your daily protein requirements.

  • Exercise:
  • Fall is already a slow time, so it is better if you don’t stop your workouts. Working out, practising yoga, running, or walking detoxifies your body and helps keep the heart and lungs healthy. Moreover, keeping fit makes you feel energetic throughout the day. So, don’t miss out on your sweating sessions.

The Don’ts:

  • Limit using Curd:
  • Curd should be limited during this season as it increases secretion from the glands, which furthermore increases the mucus secretion too. Hence, it is best restricted and in the case of people suffering from asthma or any other respiratory system diseases, it is best avoided. However, if you want to still enjoy this vitamin-C rich food, dive in with some warning spices, but only sometimes.

  • Avoid overeating:
  • The season makes one feel heavy and hence, lethargic. So, avoid overeating at all costs. Moreover, the digestive fire isn’t as strong. So, it further adds pressure on the digestive system and leads to bloating or gastritis.

  • Avoid having fried or spicy food:
  • During this season, keep your mood for binge eating of sugary and processed foods at bay. Because it creates havoc on your system. Avoid using asafoetida (hing), groundnuts, red chillies, and other foods that are highly acidic in nature.

Over to you
It is evident that autumn checklist is different from that of the previous seasons. It’s chilly and the body needs warmth. Hence, listen to your body and choose what makes it active and happy. You can start your day with warm water and herbal teas. Eating healthy is important but eating wisely is even important. You should know the effect of foods that you are consuming and how it is reacting about the same. Follow the checklist and enjoy the serene fall, inside out.
