Celebrate Eid-e-Milad in a Healthy Way with These Recipes

Eid-e-Milad is celebrated in India with a lot of enthusiasm. This day marks the birth anniversary of the founder of Islam Prophet Muhammed. As per traditional rites among the believers of Islam, this day is celebrated to pay gratitude to Prophet Muhammed, who is regarded as the messenger of almighty. This festival is celebrated by singing hymns, doing beneficial and charitable work, and meeting with relatives and loved ones. Lavish meals are prepared on this day and this food spreads love and happiness all around. Let’s make this festival happier by cooking some healthy yet delicious meals. Here are some healthy recipes to cook during the festival –

  1. Sheer Khurma – Derived from Persian it means ‘Milk cooked with dates’. This sweet dish is made of vermicelli, dates and dry fruits, milk, and spices. Cooked in ghee and laden with dry fruits such as pistachio, cashews, and raisins, this fragrant golden brown dish is served as dessert and sometimes as offerings in mosques.
  2. Mutton Kebabs – These starters are a must in Persian cuisine and often mark the starting of a harmonious meal. Popularised all over the world, these are amalgamated with the spirit of Eid and simply adds excellence to your festive celebrations. Made of minced mutton with spices and then grilled till tender, this is served with different sauces.
  3. Mutton Haleem – A stew made of meat, lentils and then mixed with flour into a thick paste. A traditional dish with authentic sultanate flavours. This is generally a light course meal that is taken with biryanis and other heavier food items. It is quite healthy as only lentils, meat, and spices are cooked in water. Yoghurt can be added to dilute the spiciness and be served with fresh coriander leaves.
  4. Naan – A rich and high in carbohydrates and fats form of bread. It is often filled with grated coconuts and smothered with butter. Made of mostly flour and then made into dough. It is used in main courses to go with the different dishes of meat and vegetables. A staple food item in the northern part of the country with many healthy cooking recipes.
  5. Mutton and Chicken Biryani – Originating from the city of Nawabs, this lavish dish is something that is popularised all over the world and loved by many. A fusion of different spices with the meat and aged old aromatic rice. Very simple to prepare and also extremely filling. It is often served in large gatherings and is one of the most served dishes in Eid.
  6. Baklava – A sweet that is crisp and has a delicious bite to it. Made mostly during Eid-e-Milad, this sweet is made of fine walnuts and phyllo mixed in honey is a pastry of layers. Often served as sweets to children and adults who come to greet their elders on the occasion of Eid.
