Control your Diabetes with these Natural Herbs

One of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Indian civilization has a strong tradition of science and technology. Ancient India was not only the land of sages and seers but the land of scholars and scientists as well. We have strongly been following yoga, Ayurveda for many centuries. Knowledge of plants and herbs for generations due to their medicinal properties has always kept us a notch higher than others.

Herbs are plants with fragrant or aromatic properties. Herbs can be used to flavour food, included in fragrances, and even a part of natural medicines. Our ancestors have tried and tested so many herbs and they have classified different herbs and their medicinal properties.

But did you know that there are some specific herbs that can be very useful in diabetes?

Yes…

For that, let us first understand what diabetes is in short?

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes is a metabolic disorder that prevents your body from properly using the energy from the food you eat resulting in high sugar levels. Finding out the best foods to eat when you have diabetes can be difficult. The main goal should be to keep blood sugar levels well-controlled. At the same time, it is also important to eat foods that help prevent diabetes complications like heart disease, kidney failure, retinopathy, neuropathy, etc.

The good news, there are several herbs that can help a great deal in diabetes. Here is a list of few herbs which can be best for diabetes-

  • Haldi (Turmeric): Curcumin in turmeric is a strong antioxidant very effective in treating diabetic complications. Curcumin prevents free radical damage. It also reduces oxidative stress associated with diabetes. Haldi is not only a natural antibacterial agent but also helps to rejuvenate the liver affected due to diabetes.
  • Methi (Fenugreek): Powdered methi seeds help in lowering blood glucose levels by slowing down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates (fasting and post-prandial). In the case of diabetic patients with cardiac issues, methi significantly helps in lowering total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is seen to play a positive role in decreasing 24-hour urine excretion of glucose as well as reducing total cholesterol. Methi seeds have a lot of fiber around 55% which helps in digestion.
  • Dalchini (Cinnamon): Cinnamon is a powerful herb for blood sugar control. Out of all herbs, spices and plant extracts, cinnamon is the most bioactive with a key substance called methyl hydroxy chalcone polymer (MHCP) that stimulates glucose uptake. Cinnamon not only improves glucose intake by the cells but also increases the secretion of insulin. Cinnamon is also seen to help in cardiac-related issues by reducing triglyceride levels, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol.
  • Ova (Parsley): Parsley can be effectively used in case of kidney issues. It has been found that this herb has strong diuretic, anti-hyperglycemic properties and it is also a good antioxidant.
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil): It is an herb that helps in improving immunity and generally strengthening the body. It helps in reducing blood sugar, normalizing triglyceride levels in the blood, lower cholesterol, and decreases blood pressure and inflammation in mild to moderate cases.
  • Shilajit: It is an ancient herb mineral extract from the Himalayas. It improves glycogen stores in the liver, helps and promotes regeneration of the pancreatic beta cells, and reduces oxidative stress. The active element in shilajit is fulvic acid.
  • Gymnema (Gudmar): Gymnema Sylvester decreases glucose absorption from the intestines. It helps to regenerate the beta cells in the pancreas and increases insulin secretion. This herb’s main action is to increase cell permeability. It also helps normalize blood sugar and triglycerides, reduce sugar cravings, and decrease insulin needs. It has been found to be effective against obesity.

The Takeaway

The above-given herbs are definitely helpful and must be inculcated in the life of a diabetic on a day-to-day basis. Their usage will definitely keep your sugars at bay, but this is not a permanent solution. A permanent solution though it seems impossible should be to reverse your diabetes and its complications.
