What do understand by the word “immunity”? Strength, the ability to fight off a disease or simply resistance to any infection. While all this is right, there is more to look out for when we talk about the immune system. The immune system generally refers to the organs and processes of the body that provide resistance to infections and toxins. It is made up of special organs, cells, and chemicals which are: white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, lymphatic system, spleen, thymus and bone marrow. Even though each component has a particular work to carry out, they work unanimously to shield the body from any outside microbe.
Your immune system has the ability to differentiate between your body’s cells and alien cells or antigens, allowing it to destroy them or prevent them from multiplying. So, having a well-built immune system is a boon because as soon as any foreign substance or toxin enters your body, the immune system is prepared to attack it before it attacks your body and deteriorates your health. To achieve a wholesome and healthy life free from infections and diseases, one should indulge in building a strong immune system.
These are a few ways in which your body can boost the immune system and benefit from it:
- Diet: By consuming immune-boosting fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits, garlic, ginger, spinach, yogurt, cinnamon, watermelon, broccoli, papaya and sunflower seeds every day, one can bring a significant change in their lifestyle. Vegetable juice and smoothie should be taken as they bring a change to the monotonous eating habits.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol: Researches have shown that consumption of alcohol tampers with the immune system. A moderate intake of alcohol is suggested so that it doesn’t harm the body.
- Reducing Stress: A hectic and stressful life is one major reason that hampers the ability of the immune system to fight off antigens. Physical or emotional stress directly disrupts our immunity making us susceptible to diseases and illness. Thus, we should practice meditation and positive thinking to keep a check on our stress level.
- Exercise: Working out regularly keeps both your mind and body in good shape. It is proven that exercising generates the growth of white blood cells that protects and strengthens the immune system.
- Sleep: Getting a good 6-7 hour of sleep is advised as your body gets tired of rigorously working every day. A healthy sleeping pattern can benefit your immunity and make you proactive.
Footnote:
Most people don’t notice the importance of the immune system until their health declines. By having a strongly built immune system, you allow your body to limit the attack of viruses and help your body to recover quickly and with ease when invaded by any virus.
