This New Year Make Mental Health a Priority

The season of resolutions has already begun and so is the mini panic to our mental health about how to be able to accomplish goals on time.
According to the World Health Organization, one out of four people will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives. Mental health should be considered as one significant element which goes with hand in hand with others such as physical, financial and emotional wellbeing, which are all connected in a whole person approach. Serious mental health issues could also affect a person’s relationship and career goals.

Why should mental health be a priority?

Mental health is a vital part and should be one of the top most priorities as it is connected with our emotions, behaviour, thoughts and can hamper our productivity and efficiency in our daily activities at work, school, and other social spaces. It is important to have positive people around to keep the sense of life and positivity alive in a person.

How to do it?

Exercising, eating a balanced and healthy meals, opening up to other people in your life, remembering things, instances or people- you are grateful for and getting a good night’s sleep can be helpful.

  • Party with friends, read a book, join a cycling group or spend some time at travel café, paint mugs, attend a pottery workshop or do what you like.
  • A positive workplace is the first thing to start from. Most of the people are mentally unhealthy or are stressed which is either caused at workplace or the circumstances at workplace create it.
  • Spend more time with kid. Kids help you to forget the sad times and make the atmosphere lighter by giving immense compassion and love.
  • Plan a mini vacay or staycation and spend time with your family. Not always friends may help and so one can consider the fact to spend equal time with both friends and family.

No, it’s not a stigma

  • While there are many factors that influence that why people don’t seek help, perhaps the biggest reason is a sense of fear and shame received from society associated with admitting help is required. Mental illness has many stigmas attached to it.
  • Unfortunately negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have a mental health condition are common but involving society to overcome the stigmas associated with mental illness is the key to having more individuals come forward.

Over to you

Our mental health doesn’t define us. Don’t let your mental illness become who you are, it is just one aspect of you. It’s high time we speak out and create awareness about mental health and its significance. Don’t let the fear of being labelled with a mental illness prevent you from seeking help.

Consult a doctor in case you face or see someone facing mental health issues.
