Baked Pita Chips

Baked Pita Chips are a crispy, healthier alternative to traditional fried chips. Made from whole wheat pita bread, these chips are seasoned with olive oil, salt, and optional spices like paprika or garlic powder. They are easy to make and perfect for dipping into your favorite sauces or enjoying as a snack.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

For Pita Bread:

  • 60 grams whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 30-40 ml warm water (adjust as needed)

For Pita Bread Chips:

  • 2 pita breads
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika or garlic powder

Procedure:

  • Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F).
  • In a bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Add the olive oil to the dry ingredients and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add warm water to the mixture, a little at a time, until a smooth and soft dough forms. You may not need all the water, so add it slowly.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 2-3 minutes until it is soft and elastic.
  • Divide the dough into 2 equal portions. Roll each portion into a circle, about 1/4-inch thick.
  • Place the rolled-out dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the pitas puff up and turn golden brown.
  • Allow the pitas to cool slightly before cutting them into chips.
  • Cut the baked pita breads into triangles or desired shapes.
  • Brush the pita triangles lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and any additional seasonings like paprika or garlic powder, if desired.
  • Arrange the pita pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven (220°C or 425°F) for 5-7 minutes, or until the chips are crisp and golden brown. Watch them closely to avoid burning.
  • Allow the pita chips to cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container to keep them crispy.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • Using whole wheat flour for the pita bread adds dietary fiber and essential nutrients like B vitamins and iron. Olive oil provides heart-healthy fats, while the optional spices can add flavor without extra calories. This recipe avoids the added sugars and unhealthy fats found in many store-bought chips, making it a nutritious choice for a satisfying snack.
