Egg in Wheat Bun is a wholesome and hearty meal that brings together the goodness of freshly baked whole wheat buns and protein-rich eggs. The buns, made from whole wheat flour, are soft, flavorful, and perfect for holding the rich egg filling. Whether you prefer your eggs sunny-side up or scrambled, this dish offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors, especially when paired with sautéed vegetables. It’s an ideal breakfast or brunch option that’s both satisfying and nutritious.
For a Serving Size of Two:
Ingredients:
For the whole wheat buns:
- 100 grams whole wheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 60 ml lukewarm water
For the egg filling:
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 50 grams of sauteed vegetable of choice
Procedure:
- In a small bowl, mix the dry yeast with lukewarm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour.
- Mix well until the dough starts to come together. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions. Shape each portion into a small bun and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover the buns with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until they puff up. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let them cool.
- For the filling, heat olive oil or butter in a pan over medium heat.
- Crack the eggs into the pan and cook them sunny-side up or scrambled, depending on your preference. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Once the buns have cooled, slice them in half. Place the cooked eggs on the bottom half of each bun. Add sauted vegetables and place the top half of the bun over the eggs.
- Enjoy your Egg in Wheat Bun warm, with a side of salad or your favorite dipping sauce.
