Mint and Masoor Tikki

Mint and Masoor Tikki are flavorful, crispy patties made from soaked and ground masoor dal (red lentils), seasoned with a blend of spices and fresh mint leaves. These tikkis are a nutritious and delicious option, perfect as a snack or a light meal. They are pan-fried to golden perfection, offering a delightful crunch and a burst of fresh flavors.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 50 grams masoor dal (red lentils), soaked for 2-3 hours
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 50 grams finely chopped onions
  • 50 grams finely chopped bell peppers
  • 50 grams finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoons oil for cooking

Procedure:

  • Drain the soaked masoor dal and grind it to a coarse paste using a little water if needed.
  • Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. When they start to splutter, add finely chopped onions and green chili. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  • Add the ground masoor dal to the pan and mix well. Stir in turmeric powder, garam masala, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes until the mixture is well combined and thickens slightly.
  • Add the finely chopped mint leaves and mix thoroughly. Let the mixture cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, shape it into small patties or tikkis.
  • Heat the remaining oil in a non-stick skillet or tava over medium heat.
  • Place the tikkis in the pan and cook until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Remove the tikkis from the pan and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Serve hot with mint chutney or yogurt.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • Masoor dal is a rich source of protein, iron, and dietary fiber, which supports muscle health and digestive function.

  • These tikkis are a wholesome choice for a nutritious snack or meal, providing a balanced combination of protein, fiber, and essential nutrients. Enjoy them with mint chutney or yogurt for added taste and health benefits.
