Oats Khichdi

Oats Khichdi is a nutritious and comforting dish that combines the goodness of oats with protein-rich moong dal and a variety of colorful vegetables. This one-pot meal is perfect for a quick and healthy lunch or dinner, offering a balance of flavors and textures. The warmth of spices like cumin, turmeric, and garam masala adds a traditional touch, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 60 grams rolled oats
  • 30 grams split yellow moong dal
  • 50 grams diced carrots
  • 50 grams green peas
  • 30 grams chopped spinach
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1 small chopped tomato
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1-2 green chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 500 ml water
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Procedure:

  • In a pressure cooker, add the washed moong dal, water, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 2-3 whistles until the dal is soft. Set aside.
  • In a pan, heat the ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent. Add the ginger, green chilies, and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  • Add the carrots, peas, and spinach. Sauté for a few minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender. Add the rolled oats and stir well to coat them with the spices.
  • Pour in the cooked moong dal along with the water. Mix everything together. Add salt to taste and garam masala. Let it simmer on low heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats and vegetables are fully cooked.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve the oats khichdi hot with a side of yogurt or raita.
