“Milagu Kuzhambu” (Pepper Soup)

Milagu Kuzhambu, or Pepper Soup, is a traditional South Indian dish known for its warming and invigorating properties. This flavorful soup combines a variety of vegetables with the strong aroma of freshly ground black pepper, making it both comforting and spicy. The tamarind adds a tangy note that balances the heat of the pepper, while the coconut oil gives it a rich texture. For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

  • 150 grams diced tomatoes
  • 100 grams chopped onion
  • 100 grams diced brinjal (eggplant)
  • 50 grams diced carrot
  • 50 grams diced potato
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves

Procedure:

  • In a pot, heat the coconut oil over medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté until they are translucent.
  • Stir in the diced tomatoes, brinjal, carrot, and potato, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until they soften slightly.
  • Add the freshly ground black pepper, turmeric powder, salt, and tamarind paste. Mix well.
  • Pour in the water, stir to combine, and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  • Remove from heat, and garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
