Sweet Potato Dhal Pies

Sweet Potato Dhal Pies are savory and satisfying pastries featuring a nutritious filling of mashed sweet potatoes and yellow dhal, encased in a whole wheat and oat flour crust. Infused with aromatic spices and herbs, these pies offer a comforting and wholesome snack or meal option.

For a Serving Size of Two:

Ingredients:

For the Pie Crust:

  • 100 grams whole wheat flour
  • 30 grams oat flour
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons cold water

For the Filling:

  • 200 grams cooked sweet potato (mashed)
  • 100 grams cooked yellow dhal (split pigeon peas)
  • 50 grams finely chopped onion
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Procedure:

  • In a bowl, mix whole wheat flour, oat flour, and salt. Cut in the coconut oil until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Heat a small amount of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow to sizzle.
  • Add chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until translucent. Add turmeric powder, ground coriander, garam masala, and chili powder. Stir for a minute to release the flavors.
  • Add mashed sweet potato and cooked dhal. Mix well and cook for another 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and stir in fresh cilantro if using. Let the filling cool.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut into circles or squares, depending on your pie mold size.
  • Place the dough in the pie molds or a muffin tin, pressing it gently to fit the shape.
Spoon the sweet potato dhal filling into each pie crust, smoothing the tops.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is heated through.
  • Let the pies cool slightly before removing from the molds. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • These pies provide a balanced combination of complex carbohydrates from sweet potatoes and whole wheat flour, along with protein from yellow dhal. The addition of spices like turmeric and cumin enhances the flavor while offering anti-inflammatory benefits. The use of coconut oil in the crust adds healthy fats, and the inclusion of fresh cilantro contributes vitamins and antioxidants. Baked rather than fried, these pies are a healthier alternative to traditional pastries. They make for a nourishing snack or a light meal, suitable for various dietary preferences.
