Tamarind rice

Tamarind Rice is a tangy and flavorful dish that combines cooked rice with a spicy tamarind sauce, creating a delightful balance of sour and savory flavors. This traditional South Indian recipe is quick to prepare and can be enjoyed as a main dish or a side.
For a Serving Size of Two:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cooked rice (about 150 grams)
- 2 tablespoons tamarind pulp (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon oil (preferably sesame or vegetable oil)
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
- 1 teaspoon chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 2-3 dried red chilies
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1-2 green chilies, slit
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons peanuts, roasted
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Procedure:
- In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add urad dal, chana dal, and dried red chilies, sautéing until the dals turn golden brown.
- Stir in the slit green chilies and turmeric powder, cooking for another minute.
- Add the tamarind pulp and salt, mixing well to combine with the spices.
- Fold in the cooked rice, ensuring the tamarind mixture coats the rice evenly. Add roasted peanuts and mix gently.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through. Adjust the tamarind and salt to taste.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
